Cashiers NC - History to Present

A bit about the past...

This beautiful community featuring breathtaking Cashiers NC Real Estate all began with a man by the name of Colonel John A. Zachary, who had explored this area in the fall of 1832 with his son. The following spring he returned to the Cashiers area to build several cabins thus establishing it as the first homestead in the Cashiers Valley area. Originating from Surry County in North Carolina, Zachary made Cashiers his home.

Hailing from Pickens, South Carolina, the second settler to the Cashiers area was James McKinney. The McKinney family arrived in 1835 and bought 600 acres. This 600 acres is now part of what is the High Hampton Inn property located just south of Cashiers. Cattle and horses were kept on this property until later in the fall when they were moved by the McKinney family to South Carolina.

So, how DID Cashier's get its name?

The most commonly told story of how Cashiers got its name involves a white stallion that was owned by James McKinney. Apparently a pretty penny was paid for this horse by Mr. McKinney so he ended up naming the horse "Cash". One day the horse wandered away towards the south and found a nice feeding area. When it was time to move the cattle and horses south for the winter, the horse could not be found. The following spring, however, Cash showed up alive and well and so the McKinney's started naming the area "Cash's Valley". There are several other stories told as to how Cashiers got it's name, however this one is the most popular.

Cashier's Industry..Past and Present

Between the years of 1888 to 1890, the railroad was present in Jackson County and therefore the logging industry became a major source of income for the area. As a matter of fact, the lumber business was the 2nd largest industry in the Western North Carolina Mountains and provided many jobs for the settlers.

During the early 1900's, the Chinese chestnut tree was imported into the area and brought with it a fatal fungus that took over many of the chestnut trees that contributed to the loss of many forests and jobs. Intended to help stimulate regrowth of the forests after the logging was done, the Chinese chestnut tree did more damage than good and destroyed most of the chestnut trees in the area by 1938.

Fast foward to the present and today in Cashiers, the largest source of income for the Cashiers Community is from residents who own second homes as well as vacationers staying in residential communities during the spring, summer and fall months. Cashiers is so attractive to visitors because of the beautiful mountains, spectacular area golf courses and the beautiful natural trees and shrubs that bloom in the spring and summer and bring breathtaking color in the fall. The Village Green in Cashiers is dedicated to the education of the public and preservation of these native plants. Plants, trees and flowers that grow in the Cashiers area include azalea, rhododendron, Canadian Hemlock, White Pine, and mountain laurel, iris, daffodils, crocus and more, bringing a gorgeous splash of color to the Cashiers area during most of the year.

There is yet another source of income to the Cashiers community as well. Christmas tree production is abundant throughout the Cashiers area and Jackson County is well known for the beautiful Christmas trees that are shipped all over the United States during the holiday season.
