Cashiers, NC Area Guide
Welcome to the idyllic community of Cashiers (pronounced KASH-erz), North Carolina! Our unincorporated village is located in southern Jackson County, and is one of our beautiful state’s premier resort destinations. For over a century, visitors and seasonal residents have been drawn to Cashiers to discover what our year-round residents already know—that the best way to experience Southern hospitality is from 3,500 feet above sea level! Mild temperatures, magnificent views of the Blue Ridge Mountains, an abundance of outdoor activity, upscale shopping and top-notch dining are just a few of the aspects of Cashiers’ unique mountain culture that bring families, professionals and retirees to our area to experience a quieter lifestyle away from urban stress that still maintains modern conveniences and amenities. The charm of our mountain hamlet will delight both the seasonal and the permanent resident alike, celebrating and preserving our natural beauty, historic heritage and rich tradition for generations to come. Cashiers is proud of the small-town values our community was built on, but maintains a cosmopolitan outlook, offering our residents the best of both worlds. Tucked away and off the beaten path, but close enough for convenience and luxury, Cashiers is your destination to find your own heaven in the mountains! History
Cashiers’ neighboring town of East LaPorte (“eastern door”), located alongside the Tuckasegee River past Cullowhee, was originally established as an Indian trading post by early French Huguenot pioneers. The village of Cashiers is reputedly named after a lost horse. The dense forest, steep mountain ranges, and laurel and rhododendron thickets kept the Cashiers area largely untouched until the middle of the 19th century, when businessmen from humid shipping towns sought out the cool mountain breeze as a refuge from seasonal heat. Early Cashiers settlers the Hampton family purchased an estate that became the Hampton home, renaming it High Hampton after the ancestral home in England. In 1890, Dr. William S. Halstead, related to the Hampton family by marriage, purchased The High Hampton Country Club, eventually constructing it on the grounds of the historic family estate. In addition to the High Hampton Inn Historic District, other local historic destinations listed on the National Register of Historic Places include Camp Merrie-Woode, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Sapphire Valley Fairfield Inn and the Mordecai Zachary House. Less than an hour’s drive away from Cashiers, visitors and residents can explore Asheville’s historic destinations, which among many others, include the world-renowned Biltmore Estate and Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historic Site. Our region is known world-wide for its granite domes, sparkling waterfalls, lush laurel and rhododendron thickets, dense forests, valley floors and rare high altitude bogs. In short: If you want to enjoy the splendor of nature at its most pristine, Cashiers is perfect for you! One of the main draws of our area is the beautiful shoreline of Lake Glenville or Lake Toxaway, considered by many to be among the top 10 lakes in the nation.
